Materials you’ll need:

  • Wax (Soy wax, beeswax or paraffin wax)
  • Fragrance oil of your choice
  • Candle wick
  • Wick centering device
  • Double boiler or melting pot
  • Thermometer
  • Candle container (jar or tin)
  • Wooden skewers or chopsticks

Step 1: Prepare Your Candle Container Choose a container for your candle. You can use a mason jar, a tin, or any heat-resistant container that you like. Clean the container thoroughly and dry it before pouring the wax.

Step 2: Prepare the Candle Wick Cut your wick to the length of your container plus a few extra inches. Thread the wick through the wick centering device and place it in the center of the container. Make sure the wick is straight and centered before proceeding.

Step 3: Melt the Wax Melt the wax in a double boiler or melting pot. Use a thermometer to monitor the temperature of the wax. The ideal temperature for most waxes is between 160°F and 180°F.

Step 4: Add Fragrance Oil Once the wax has melted, add fragrance oil to the wax. The recommended amount is usually 1 ounce of fragrance oil per pound of wax. Stir the fragrance oil into the wax until it is thoroughly mixed.

Step 5: Pour the Wax Carefully pour the wax into the prepared container. Use the wooden skewers or chopsticks to keep the wick centered while the wax cools and hardens.

Step 6: Let the Candle Cool Allow the candle to cool and harden for several hours. It’s best to let the candle cool overnight to ensure that it has completely hardened.

Step 7: Trim the Wick Once the candle has cooled, trim the wick to about ¼ inch in length. This will ensure that the candle burns evenly and doesn’t create too much smoke.
